Construction on the current Duomo, which was dedicated to Saint Lawrence, began in 1605 following a project devised by Milanese architect Antonio Maria Corbetta, on the pre-existing 10th century ruins. Corbetta’s project for the façade was never completed due to a lack of funds and the works were not completed until 1881 under the guidance of another Milanese architect, Maciacchini. In the gable there is a statue of Saint Lawrence, Saint Bovo (the city’s patron saint where his remains are kept) and Saint Roch. Only the foundations of the ancient church have been preserved and a section of the bell tower which collapsed in 1436. Main points of interest in the three-nave interior include: the fresco of the Madonna del Soccorso from 1436 by Andrino di Edesia, and a painting of the Visitation from 1599 by Scipione Crespi. The decoration of the choir, the main altar and the dome were completed in the 19th century by the artists Gambini and Morgari. A Serassi concert organ may also be admired from 1833 and the Duomo Treasures including sacred furnishings and books with miniatures from the 15th century. |
