A powerful defensive structure with walls that are 2.4 metres thick, follows a semi-circle facing the hills and was the home of the Malaspina in the 10th century, who chose Oramala and made it one of the most important marquisates in northern Italy. The castle then passed into the hands of the Este family which, in 1474, had the castle reconstructed and remained there until the end of the 18th century when it was abandoned. It fell into disrepair until it was bought in 1985 by the Panigazzi family which commenced its renovation. Since 2005 it has been home to the Museum of Rural Art and Iron Equipment.
