This ancient bronze equestrian statue (whose colour is thought to be behind its name Ray of Sun), depicts a king or an emperor (Marcus Aurelius, Antonino Pio, Constantine or Theodore). Probably taken by king Liutprando from the city of Ravenna, it became the symbol for Pavia until 1796 when, after the French revolution, it was seen to symbolise the monarchy and was destroyed by the Jacobites. The current statue was completed in 1937 by the sculptor Francesco Messina. |
