Although this will have existed in the 7th century as an early Christian church, the modern construction was consecrated in 1132. The name likely comes from the fact that the original ceiling was made from gold wooden roof truss. The remains of Saint Augustine are held in the church, as are those of Severinus Boëthius and the Lombard king Liutprand. The current church which boasts a Romanesque style, with the typical gabled façade in brick and sandstone is referred to by Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarch. Inside the church, the frescoes dating back to the 15th and 16th century on the left of the façade are of great interest, as is the majestic arch in marble covering three floors which was built between 1360 and 1400, and the pavement mosaics from the 12th century, depicting a knight battling against a dragon (probably Saint George). One wall is dominated by a wonderful canvas from 1599 by Gian Battista Tassinari.
