This is the city’s oldest Church and is known as the ‘red church’ because of the colour of its stonework. It was built in the 12th century over the ruins of an ancient Lombard temple from the 8th century. During the 17th century, it was used to hold the victims of the plague. It was later deconsecrated and used as a storeroom for gun powder for the cavalry before being abandoned. It has undergone renovation works more than once, the last time in 1956 when it was chosen as the sacred Temple for the Italian Cavalry. The coat of arms for all the Cavalry Regiments may be viewed inside. |
